If I can find a good reason to go out for breakfast or brunch, I’ll take it. Last Saturday it was my mum’s birthday which is the perfect excuse to go and indulge in a cooked breakfast of some sort, because as much as I love my porridge or granola, nothing beats syrupy pancakes or perfectly poached eggs. I wanted to try somewhere new and not so local to us, so when a colleague recommended 185 Watling St. Pub & Kitchen in Towcester, Northamptonshire, I booked a table. Is anyone else completely guilty of scrolling through the entire menu online before you go to restaurants? I am, and when I saw that they did unicorn hot chocolates and eggs benedict, I had high hopes!
The restaurant itself is beautiful. It sits right on the high street and despite looking relatively small, its actually quite big once you get inside, especially as they have an upstairs section for private functions. They also have a large garden area too which I can imagine gets packed in summer when everyone heads out for a pint or glass of wine. I absolutely loved their colour scheme and decor! With so many windows, sky lights and vibrant colours and prints, you could tell that this restaurant had gone the extra mile to make it a comfortable and inviting place for people to go and enjoy their food.
My mum ordered peppermint tea and the bacon and maple syrup pancakes, and I got the unicorn hot chocolate with eggs benedict, which is my ultimate treat breakfast! Although I maybe expected a bit more of the unicorn hot chocolate, I think Instagram is to blame there, everything about our meal was so delicious. Poached eggs on an English muffin instead of bread made a nice change, and my mum’s pancakes were perfect!
It’s not the cheapest breakfast you’ll find, but for a special occasion it’s just what you could want. I hope I can make it back there one day with Darryl so I can try something else off their breakfast menu! With plenty of healthy options, it makes a nice change to a menu full of fatty fry ups (though they do have this too!).
