I’m forever admiring home made Christmas decorations on Pinterest and wishing I could have a go myself, and this year I thought it was about time I got creative. So a couple of weeks ago Darryl and I headed to a local woodland area in search of pine cones, holly and twigs (disclaimer – we didn’t damage any living plants, we only took bits and bobs off the ground!). We knew we wanted to use nature to make Christmassy potpourri, though recent weather has left everything quite damp. We solved this by putting the pine cones in the oven to dry out which allowed them to open up… there’s an interesting tip for you for future reference!
To decorate, we bought silver spray paint and coated all that we had collected in the silvery sheen to give it all an icy and wintery look. Once they were dry we arranged the pine cones neatly in a dish to place in the living room which added to the festive feel, then we added the holly and twigs to my pre-lit twigs that live in a vase in my bedroom. Not only is this a great idea for your own home, but you could wrap the silvery pine cones in cellophane and give them away as gifts! I’ve even seen in various shops that you can buy a sort of winter scented ‘perfume’, which you simply pour over the pine cones and holly to give them that homely Christmas smell.
